If you have read this far, you probably already have a dog.
But here is some food for thought for anyone who has yet to add a dog to their home.

Do I have time for a dog?

Dogs are social animals. It is a very unnatural state for a dog to be alone for any great length of time. This isolation can lead to behavior issues such as barking, soiling, digging, and many other behaviors in an attempt to soothe themselves.

Do I have small children?

Children under the age of seven cannot possibly understand that dogs think differently than humans (some adults cannot grasp this-how can we expect a child to!). Children also are more prone to accidents involving dogs (falling on top of them, hanging on them, pulling tails or ears). If you choose to have both small children and dogs it is imperative that you teach your children to respect the dog and to allow the dog a place to go when he feels threatened or overwhelmed.

Am I willing to look at my behavior honestly and clearly? We get the behavior we reinforce!

It is SO easy to allow your puppy to jump on you when he is a tiny, furry bundle of cuteness. However, when that 10 lb puppy grows into a 110 lb adult and continues to jump, it is no longer cute. You may not be paying attention to your dog but trust me, your dog is paying very close attention to you.

Am I willing to pay for training, pet insurance, medical expenses? How about paying a pet sitter or a dog walker if I travel or work long hours?
