Let’s consider a typical walk. Next time you are in the back yard or somewhere your dog can run safely off-leash, watch your dog walk. At what speed does he walk? Is he right at your side? Is he in front of you? Typically, a dog will run ahead, sniffing and investigating, then will turn around and run back to you.
Why then do we expect dogs to just know to walk at our side without teaching them this? I don’t know, but we do, even though this is just not a natural behavior for a dog.
